Christmas Markets in Munich near Underground stations (U-Bahn)
Table of Contents
ToggleI’ve always dreamed of sharing the enchantment of Germany’s festive season with my travel buddy, Bernie. This year, my dream became a reality when Bernie flew to Munich to share in our Christmas market festivities. Because Bernie could only come for four days, we had to plan our Christmas Market trip with the greatest precision.
Munich turned out to be the perfect choice for a short trip because it has many charming Christmas markets within close proximity and easy access to most underground stations. Moreover, the city is known for its rich traditions and cosy ambience, which transform into a glittering winter wonderland in December. From traditional Christkindl markets to contemporary alternatives, the city boasts a variety of festive experiences that captivate every visitor.
During our two-day stay in Munich, we visited a variety of Christmas markets. Here are our best finds, with a complete guide to the nearest underground station and helpful tips to make the most of your visit.
The Best Christmas Markets in Munich
1. Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz
This Christmas Market is set against the breathtaking backdrop of the neo-Gothic Town Hall. Moreover, the Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz stretches all the way to Rindermarkt. With roots dating back to the 14th century, it is Munich’s most visited Christmas market. The market features over 130 stalls, offering everything from handcrafted decorations to seasonal treats like roasted almonds and mulled wine.
- Where: In the Prunkhof, the inner courtyard of the Town Hall, you’ll find a small, cozy Christmas market. Escape the bustling crowds for a peaceful moment amidst nativity displays and mulled wine stalls.
- Nearest Underground: Marienplatz U-Bahn station drops you right in the heart of the market. If you’re driving, consider using a park-and-ride lot outside the city centre or parking in nearby garages. Note that parking fees range from €4 to €6 per hour.
- Dates: 25.11. – 24.12.2024
- Opening times: Monday to Saturday 10 am – 21 pm, Sunday 10 am – 20 pm
- Best features of the market: A standout feature is the towering Christmas tree that floods the square with festive lights. Here, you can listen to live advent music from the Town Hall balcony, which gets you in the holiday spirit.
- What not to miss: Every Wednesday at 4:30 pm, famous musicians lead a festive singalong of Christmas carols at the Kripperlmarkt (Rindermarkt 1). We suggest downloading the songbook in advance so you can join in the festive cheer.
- Pro Tip: Need a break from street market food? Then we suggest warming up from the cold weather outside with a traditional Bavarian meal at the Ratskeller restaurant. Must-try dishes include Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) and Schweinebraten (roasted pork). Reservations are essential, particularly over weekends.
2. Kripperlmarkt at Rindermarkt
- Where: Kripperlmarkt is nestled between Marienplatz and Rindermarkt. This market hosts one of Germany’s largest nativity displays. The Christmas Market dates back to 1757. If you are looking for something really special, this market features an extraordinary selection of handcrafted nativity scenes and figurines, including exquisite carvings from South Tyrol, Oberammergau, and the Erzgebirge. Strolling through these beautifully curated stalls is a must for lovers of traditional craftsmanship.
3. Winter Magic at Viktualienmarkt
- Where: This market is within walking distance of the above two markets at the Viktualien Market.
- Best features of the market: During Advent, the Viktualienmarkt radiates traditional festive charm with its decorated stalls. In addition to its usual Christmas delights, the market also offers seasonal specialities and gift ideas.
- Dates: 22.11.2024 – 4.1.2025
- Operating times: 10 am – 8 pm. The Viktualienmarkt is closed on Sundays.
- Nearest Underground: Marienplatz
4 .Christmas Village at the Munich Residence
- Where: The Christmas Village in the Residence’s Kaiserhof courtyard exudes a unique Christmas atmosphere compared to the other markets described above.
- Best features: The best features of this Christmas Village are that you can discover artisanal crafts, traditional incense smokers (called Räuchermännchen, which is unique to German Christmas Markets), and nativity scenes from Old Bavaria. This year (2024), a woodcarver from Tyrol showcases his artistry live. Children will adore the fairy tale forest, a true magical highlight for families.
- Date: 18.11. – 22.12.2024
- Operating times: 11 am – 9 pm
- Nearst Underground: Odeonsplatz

5. Medieval Market at Wittelsbacherplatz
- The best feature of this market is that it is a step back in time to Medieval times. Organisers dress up in medieval costumes, which makes for awesome photographs. This small market is known for its authentic fare, handmade goods, and traditional music, which transport you to a bygone era. It’s a treasure trove for unique gifts and an exciting outing for kids. This market will not be everyone’s cup of tea as none of the traditional Christmas items can be found here. Bernie, in particular, did not really enjoy this market.
- Date: 25.11. – 23.12.2024
- Operating times: 11 am – 9 pm
- Nearest Underground: Odeonsplatz
- Pro Tip: Just a short walk from the market is Munich’s oldest coffee house, Café Luitpold. We highly recommend enjoying a cosy coffee and cake break there.
6. Schwabing Christmas Market
- Where: Underground Station Münchener Freiheit
- The best features of this Market: Art and design enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the Schwabing Christmas Market. This hidden gem showcases local artists and craftsmen, offering one-of-a-kind pieces ideal for unique Christmas gifts. The relaxed vibe and creative displays make it an unforgettable experience.
- Date: 29.11. – 24.12.2024
- Operating times: 12 am – 8.30 pm
Saturday and Sunday 11 am – 8.30 pm - How to get to the Swabing Christmas Market: The market is conveniently located at the Münchener Freiheit U-Bahn station (Lines U3 and U6).
7. Tollwood Winterfestival
- Where: This Christmas market is located on the Theresienwiese (the location of the October Fest).
- Best features of this Market: The Tollwood Christmas Market celebrates culture, sustainability, and creativity. The bio-certified market features handpicked crafts, international cuisine, and a dynamic lineup of live performances and theatre shows. For those seeking an unconventional holiday experience, Tollwood offers a festive blend of tradition and modernity.
- Experience: The market did not quite have the traditional holiday vibe you would expected from a German Christmas Market. Instead, it is a modernised version of a general market.
- Date: 26.11. – 31.12.2024
- Operating times: 2 pm – 10.30 pm
Saturday und Sunday 11am – 11.30 pm - Nearest Underground: Theresienwiese

8. Christmas Market at Munich Airport
Before Bernie flew back to South Africa, we visited the Christmas market at Munich Airport.
- Where: Located in the covered MAC Forum. The market invites both travellers and visitors to enjoy in the festive spirit before or after a flight. Even non-passengers are welcome at this Christmas Market.
- Best features of this Market: Over 50 beautifully decorated stalls showcase regional crafts, seasonal delicacies, and, of course, mulled wine. A standout feature is the open-air ice-skating rink, offering fun for the whole family. You can check the airport’s website for a schedule of attractions.
- Experience: With its twinkling lights and cozy atmosphere, the Christmas market transforms the airport into a winter wonderland. We liked the fact that we could enjoy one last mulled wine together before Bernie boarded her flight back home.
- Tip: Visitors arriving by car can park for free in parking area P20 for up to three hours.
- Date: 15.11. – 29.12.2024

- Nearest Underground: Munich Airport
General Tips for Visiting Munich’s Christmas Markets
Best Times to Visit: The markets get extremely crowded in the evenings from about 5 PM onwards. We suggest going late afternoon to experience the full charm of the market when the lights shine at their brightest. For smaller crowds, plan your visit earlier in the day.
Nearest underground station: Parking in the city centre is limited and super expensive. Therefore, you should opt for U-Bahn, trams, or buses for a stress-free trip.
Dress Warmly: Munich’s winters can be chilly. Remember gloves, a hat, and a warm coat—a lesson Bernie learned very early on our trip after arriving from sunny Johannesburg!
