Like most big cities worldwide, each area in Cape Town has pros and cons. This is particularly true when you consider its location, vibe, and safety.
In this article, we take a look at some of the most popular Cape Town suburbs and make recommendations for an unforgettable stay.
Where to stay on the Atlantic Seaboard: Cape Town, South Africa
The Atlantic Seaboard consists of residential suburbs like Mouille Point, Green Point, Sea Point, Fresnaye, Bantry Bay, Clifton, Camps Bay, Bakoven, Llandudno and Hout Bay. These areas are often referred to as Millionaires Mile.
#1 Sea Point & Green Point
Sea Point and Green Point suburbs are our two favourite areas on the Atlantic Seaboard for hotel stays in Cape Town. They offer stunning beaches, scenic mountain ranges, and city vibes.
Sea Point is located right by the ocean and is known for its lengthy promenade, which is perfect for walking or jogging.
We’ve spent many wonderful days in this trendy area with exceptional sunset views. Sea Point seamlessly transitions into Green Point, a lively recreational area separated from the water by the park of the same name.
The area is ideal for people attending events or shows at the world-famous Green Point stadium. For example, Robbie Williams will be performing his Calabash show there on the 22nd of January 2025. The best part about the Green Point area is that it is within very close proximity of the V&A Waterfront.
Pros of staying in Sea Point or Green Point, Cape Town
- Close to the city center and the V&A Waterfront.
- It is the ideal location for people attending events at the Green Point Stadium
- Beautiful promenade for relaxing coastal walks (from Sea Point to the V&A Waterfront).
- Wide selection of restaurants, cafés, and supermarkets.
Cons of staying Sea Point or Green Point, Cape Town
- Certain areas of Sea Point can be less safe, especially at night.
- The area can be very noisy, particularly at hotels near main roads or beach front.
How safety is Sea Point and Green Point?
- Both areas are very safe during the day, but caution is advised at night, especially when walking in the back roads and promenade.

This hotel is located in the same building as the famous Mojo Market. Mojo is a lively food hall offering international street food and live music. Mojo Hotel is a mere 5-minute walk from the iconic Sea Point Pools, one the edge of the Atlantic ocean.
This affordable hotel is excellently located in Green Point, just a 20-minute walk from the famous V&A Waterfront.
#2 Accommodation in Camps Bay, Cape Town
Camps Bay is the go-to spot for beach lovers, trendy travellers and celebrities. This luxurious suburb offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Twelve Apostles mountain range. Camps Bay is known for its trendy bars and restaurants along the beachfront. The Camps Bay stretch is the ideal spot for an exceptional sunset view and trendy sun downer spots.

- Fantastic beach location with breathtaking ocean and mountain views.
- Plenty of trendy restaurants and bars.
- Perfect for sunsets and beach walks.
- Celebrities are often spotted at luxury hotels.
- This area is generally safe with good policing.

Budget hotels are difficult to find in Camps Bay.The V&A Waterfront is one of the most popular and well-known areas in Cape Town. Here, you will find many excellent restaurants, speciality shops, and unique activities (such as helicopter trips over the Cape Town peninsula); it’s also ideal for those who want to be in the heart of vibey action.
Where to stay in the city bowl Cape Town South Africa
The city bow of Cape Town consists of Bo-Kaap (where the colourful Cape Malay houses are), Devil’s Peak Estate, De Waterkant, Foreshore, Gardens, Higgovale, Strct Six (not a safe area for tourists), Oranjezicht, Salt River, Tamboerskloof, Vredehoek, and Woodstock (be vigilant at all times).
#1 The V&A Waterfront
The well-known V& A Waterfront is located next to Cape Town habour.
Pros of staying at the V&A Waterfront
- Highly monitored by law enforcement agencies, ensuring great safety for foreigners.
- Variety of restaurants and exclusive shopping center.
- Direct access to boat tours and trips to Robben Island.
Cons of staying at the V&A Waterfront
- Accommodation prices are often higher than in other parts of the city due to its location.
- Very touristy, particularly in-season, when many travellers flock to the V&A waterfront.

- The Waterfront is one of the safest areas in Cape Town, with ample police presence and private security.

Luxury Hotels at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
One of Cape Town’s most impressive hotels, The Silo, is located in a former grain storage tower called a silo. The Silo is one of the most luxurious hotels in Cape Town with exceptional views over the harbour and Table Mountain.
Even if you’re not staying here, the rooftop bar is worth a visit for the spectacular views over the Cape peninsula
Located on the marina at the V&A Waterfront, this grand hotel offers luxurious accommodation with a view of Table Mountain.
Not surprisingly, there are no budget hotel options at the Waterfront.
#2 Gardens and Oranjezicht in the City Bowl, cape Town
These two neighbourhoods lie beneath Table Mountain, offering a relaxed, peaceful (much less touristy) atmosphere. Here, you’ll find many charming guesthouses and boutique hotels, providing a sense of closeness to nature without being far from the city centre.
Pros of staying in Gardens and Oranjezicht
- Quiet residential area with many charming accommodations.
- Close to Table Mountain, and ideal for hiking many routes.
- The city center is easily accessible.

- Less tourist infrastructure compared to other areas.
Safety in Gardens and Oranjezicht
- This area is considered generally safe, but as in any residential area, caution should be exercised after dark.

#3 Bo-Kaap, Cape Town

Pros of staying in Bo-Kaap
- Unique cultural experience with lots of history.
- Central location, close to the City Bowl and Table Mountain.
- Numerous small cafés and restaurants offering local cuisine.
Cons of staying in Bo-Kaap
- Pick-pocketing are sometimes reported in this area.
- Bo-Kaap is a residential area, so there aren’t many hotel options.
- Scammers and fraudsters know this is a touristy area. Therefore, you need to be extra vigilant even in the daytime. We have never felt unsafe in this area, but caution is suggested.
Is it safe to stay in the Bo-Kaap region?
- Relatively safe during the day, but like anywhere in Cape Town, caution is advised at night.
- We do not recommend walking in the streets at night.

Founded by the late visionary hotelier Gail Behr, this boutique hotel exudes historic charm and artistic flair, offering unique views of the city and Table Mountain. Even if you’re not staying here, a visit to the hotel’s restaurant is a must.
Mid-range Hotels in Bo-Kaap
Centrally located yet quiet, this hotel blends African, French, Indian, and Malay influences.
A cosy hotel in Bo-Kaap offering a small pool and air-conditioned rooms. Guests particularly appreciate the friendliness of the staff.
Hotel Stays in the City Bowl (Cape Town City Center)
The City Bowl is the heart of Cape Town, surrounded by numerous restaurants, bars, and attractions like the V&A Waterfront and the famous Greenmarket Square.
Tip: Avoid hotels on Long Street, no matter how attractive they appear on their website. Besides being an extremely loud negbourhood, it is also the hang-out place of the ‘ladies of the night’.
Pros of staying in the City Bowl, Cape Town
- Centrally located, it is ideal for sightseeing.
- Many cultural highlights and restaurants are nearby.
Cons of staying in the City Bowl, Cape Town
- It can be unsafe at night in some parts of the city centre.
- Be cautious on less busy streets, and use taxis or Uber.
More hectic than the quieter suburbs.
People offering illegal services are often spotted in street corners.

- The City Bowl is relatively safe during the day, but be vigilant in the evening.
- Avoid side streets.
- Busy, well-lit areas are safer.

Altough there are several budget-friendly hotels in this area, we do not recommend staying here unless you are with a group.

Where to stay in the southern suburbs of Cape Town
The southern suburbs of Cape Town include Bergvliet, Bischopscourt, Claremont, Constantia, Grassy Park, Harfield Village, Heathfield, Kenilworth, Kenwyn, Rondebosch, Wynberg, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, Kommetjie, Muizenberg, Noordhoek, Simon’s Town, Sy James to name a few.
Our favourite region in the southern suburbs is Constantia.
#1 Constantia, Cape Town
Constantia is one of Cape Town’s most exclusive residential areas, located a bit further from the city centre, surrounded by green hills and vineyards. Wine lovers will especially appreciate this district, as it is home to some of South Africa’s oldest and most renowned wineries.
Pros of staying in Constantia
- Quiet, upscale area with luxurious hotels and guesthouses.
- Almost rural atmosphere, yet relatively close to the city centre.
- Numerous top-class wineries and excellent restaurants.
- Perfect for relaxation and nature experiences.
Cons of staying in Constantia, cape Town
- Less infrastructure than in more central neighbourhoods.
- Farther from the beaches and V&A Waterfront.
- A car is necessary for easy access to many of the top attractions like the Kirstenbosch Gardens.
Safety in Constantia
- Constantia is considered one of Cape Town’s safest areas, ideal for those seeking relaxation and tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.

Where to stay in the west coast suburbs, Cape Town
The west coast suburbs consist of Atlantis (a local township not considered safe), Bloubergstrand, Mamre, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton, Montague Gardens, Parklands, Table View and West Beach.
Our favourite areas are Bloubergstrand and Melkbosstrand. We may be prejudiced because Bernie and I have holiday homes here
#1 Bloubergstrand
Bloubergstrand, about 20 kilometres north of the city centre, is especially known for its breathtaking views of Table Mountain, which can be enjoyed from the beaches.
This area is popular with kite surfers and beach lovers, offering a relaxed atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Pros of staying in Bloubergstrand
- Spectacular views of Table Mountain and Table Bay.
- Restaurants tend to be cheaper than spots near the V&A and Camps Bay.
- Perfect for water sports like kite surfing and windsurfing.
- Quieter and more relaxed than the central neighbourhoods.
- Convenient location for trips to the West Coast or the wine regions north of Cape Town.
- Much more affordable than the Camps Bay area
Cons of staying in Bloubergstrand
- A bit further from the Cape Town city centre (about 30 minutes by car).
- It is not as lively and ‘posh’ as the Atlantic Seaboard suburbs such as Camps Bay, Llundudno or the Cape Town Waterfront.
Safety in Bloubergstrand
- Bloubergstrand is a safe area, particularly in residential neighbourhoods and along the promenade.

Mid-range hotels in Bloubergstrand
This guesthouse is only 500 metres from the beach and offers a pool, comfortably furnished rooms and excellent service.
The Sir David Boutique Guest House
The Sir David Guest House is located in a quiet residential area in the original part of Bloubergststrand. The stunning guest house offers a small pool and direct access to the beach. Many restaurants and shops are in the immediate vicinity.
Budget Hotels in Bloubergstrand
The Shalom Beach House offers two bedrooms with space for up to four people. It is located approx. 500 metres from the beach.
Self-catering accommodation in Bloubergstrand
In addition to hotels, Blouberstrand also offers charming boutique hotels, guesthouses, and numerous stylish apartments, which can be conveniently booked via Airbnb or booking.com.
