What to do on Heritage (Braai) Day in Johannesburg
Table of Contents
ToggleThe 24th of September is Heritage Month in South Africa. National Heritage Day is celebrated on the 24th of September. Heritage Day is a celebration of South African culture. It is about recognising our differences and celebrating the things that bond us as a nation.
Consequently, this day has been declared a public holiday since 1996. On this day, South Africans celebrate their cultural traditions and heritage by doing what they best do. For example, eating, drinking, and enjoying a ‘braai’ (the Afrikaans word for barbeque) with friends or family.
Why is Heritage Day also called National Braai Day?
Jan Scannell (more commonly known as Jan Braai) coined the term ‘Braai Day’ as an initiative to unite South Africans.
In African languages, a braai is called Shisa Nyama or Ukosa. Many South Africans love lighting a fire and preparing a meal over wood or coals.
The braai tradition aims to unite all South Africans, like our rugby and sunshine.
