Wine Farm Day Trip 1: The Cape Peninsula
The Cape Peninsula wine farm region is the most popular among tourists visiting the Cape Town Waterfront area because the closest wine farm is only 18km away via the M3 or M63 highway.Â
We love this wine farm region because it has amazing forest-like scenery and interesting history. It is also close to the Kirstenbosch Gardens, Hout Bay Marina, and Silvermine Nature Reserve. In addition, two of our favourite small coastal towns, Hout Bay and Kalk Bay, are nearby.Â

The winding road from Cape Town to Constantia leads through forests, past stately homes, and stunning natural scenery. Several of these estates produced wines for Napoleon and other statespeople.
Our favourite wine farms in the Cape Peninsula region are Beau Constantia, Constantia Glen, Groot Constantia, and Constantia Uitsig Wine Farm.
# 1. Beau Constantia: Modern tasting Room with panoramic view
Description: Beau Constantia is saddled between the Constantia and Table Mountain ranges. The winery is located at the top of Constantia Nek overlooking False Bay. The floor-to-ceiling glass tasting room offers exquisite views over the valley. The wine-tasting room has modern indoor and outdoor seating areas (the Kitchen Table, Outside area or Protea Pod). Their tasting room platter at R350 is highly recommended.
Unique feature: Exceptional panoramic views.

Vinyard or cellar tours: No, for example, Beau Constantia does not have a cellar tour. Yet, there are many wine farms that offer unique cellar tours in this article.
Reservation required: Yes, but walk-ins are also accommodated when space is available.
Onsite restaurant: The Chefs Warehouse offers exceptional panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and serves quality food in a classy environment. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner Monday through Sunday, except for no dinners on Sunday.

# 2. Constantia Glen: Charming historical wine farm near Cape Town
Description: Constantia Glen Wine Farm is located next to Beau Constantia in Constantia Nek. The wine farm has a traditional feel with Cape Dutch-style buildings. The atmosphere is relaxed, with open-plan seating and a lovely open-air terrace overlooking the mountains. They have a cosy indoor wine-tasting room for those chilly winter days.

Onsite restaurant: The restaurant is known for its delicious Flammkuchen (much like a thin-based pizza). Although the menu has a limited variety, they do have a Vegan offering. Lunch and dinner are served Monday through Sunday.

# 3. Groot Constantia Wine Farm
Description: Groot (translated Grand) Constantia is the oldest wine-producing farm in South Africa, dating back to 1685. It is located on a large estate and has several on-site eateries. The estate houses three cellars and two tasting venues (one for large groups and another for private guests). There are also two equally outstanding restaurants, Jonkershuis and Simons’ restaurant.
Unique feature: A chocolate and wine pairing experience for R230 and their Visitors Route Experience (VRE) for R180 pp (chocolate tasting can be added for 75). The VRE includes a cellar tour, wine tasting, and a souvenir wine glass. Tickets for the VRE are available from Webtickets or can be purchased at the estate. Simon’s restaurant offers picnic dining. Â
Opening hours Monday to Sunday: Bottom Cellar 9 am to 6 pm, Production Cellar 10 am to 5 pm or Top Cellar 10 am to 5 pm.
Onsite restaurant: Jonkershuis restaurant is surrounded by ancient oak trees. It has four eating venues (inside and outside) and a play area for children. Simon’s restaurant serves seasonal and local dishes. Here, you can enjoy anything from the classic fish and chips to a more traditional feast of Slow-Roasted Lamb Shoulder or Braised Pork Belly.

# 4. Constantia Uitsig Wine Farm, Is it worth visiting?
Description: Constantia Uitsig provides the perfect (full-day) outing for adults and kids. Besides three lovely restaurants, the estate also has a magnificent heritage garden, a bike park for kids (with a pump track covering 2.8km), a wine shop offering tastings, and unique heritage market shops.
The Blockhouse Kitchen Restaurant is a farm-to-table restaurant. It prepares exceptional food with produce purchased from local growers and farmers. The restaurant is open from breakfast through to dinner, Monday through Friday. Le Grotto Ristorante is an Italian restaurant with the most relaxed and cosy atmosphere. Chardonnay Deli serves flavoursome food in a classy yet comfortable setting.
Unique feature: The heritage market, which houses Sushi Box, Hiro Izakaya (a Korean restaurant), Four & Twenty, Kristens Kickass Ice Cream, Nest Deli, and Ember Oaks.
Onsite restaurants: The three main restaurants are open daily for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Wine tasting hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Sundays, 10 am to 4:30 pm. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Wine tastings can be booked on the DinePlan app.

Wine Farm Day trip 2: Cape Town to Durbanville Wine Route – about 29 km
The Durbanville wine route is ideal if you stay near Bloubergstrand. For your convenience, you can now also enjoy the hop-on-hop-off wine safari in Durbanville. It transports visitors to several wine farms in the Durbanville region with a 22-seater open vehicle. The wine safari tickets cost R300 pp and operate Tuesday to Sunday.
Does Durbanville wine farms have a tram?
The Durbanville Wine Safari operates with a northern and southern line. The Wine Farms on the northern line include Groot Phesantekraal, Diemersdal, Canto, Meerendal, Bloemendal, and D’Aria. The Southern Line Wine Farms include De Grendel, Durbanville Hills, Klein Roosboom, Nitida, Maastricht Wines, and Bloemendal.
Best wine tasting in Durbanville
Although we enjoy most of the wine farms in this region, our favourites are De Grendel, Durbanville Hills, Klein Roosboom and Diemersdal. Â
Petra and I have been to most of the farms in this area because many are boutique wine farms and are less touristy than the ones in the Cape Peninsula.Â
# 1. De Grendel: Best wine farm near airport
Description: De Grendel (meaning latch or lock in Dutch)
Unique features of the Grendel Wine Farm: De Grendel wine farm offers a farm tour to admire Springbuck, Eland, Red Hartebeest and Bontebok. The farm tour lasts about an hour and costs R620 for two people. Why not add a picnic to your farm tour for only R1250 for two people? Booking for a picnic needs to be made at least 48 hours in advance.
Tasting hours of De Grendel Monday to Saturday: 9 am to 5 pm, and Public Holidays 10 am to 4 pm. Bookings are essential on weekends or Public Holidays.
Best traditional restaurant on a wine farm
Onsite restaurant at the Grendel: The Grendel Wine Farm has one of the most opulent restaurants in the Durbanville region. Enjoy either a two-course set menu for R575 pp or a three-course set menu for R635 pp. To make your experience even more amazing, we suggest pairing the food and wine. The food is delicious and a blend of traditional and Cape cuisine. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. No children are allowed for dinner reservations.

# 2. Durbanville Hills Wine Estate
Description of Durbanville Hills Wine Farm: Durbanville Hills Wine Estate offers stunning views of Table Mountain. The Tangram restaurant not only serves the best food in the Southern Hemisphere (in my opinion)Â but also has the best sunset views.
Unique feature: The farm offers chocolate, biltong and dried fruit, and cheese wine pairings. In winter, they offer hot chocolate and wine tasting. There is live music every Sunday from 3 pm to 6 pm (October to March).Â
Things to do at Durbanville Wine Farms
Durbanville Hills Wine Farm offers interesting cellar tours Monday through Friday between 11 am and 3 pm. The cellar tours cost R130 and last 90 minutes. No need to look for a childminder; take your kids along and let them enjoy one of the kiddies’ pairings. The farm is child—and pet-friendly.

Best wine farm with restaurant in Durbanville
Restaurant at Durbanville Hills Wine Farm: There are two restaurants, The Tangram and The Olive Grove Bistro. We cannot recommend The Tangram highly enough! The Olive Grove Bistro is set against lush lawns and olive trees. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming. Kids can enjoy the nearby play area. This restaurant is not open in the evenings after 6 pm.

# 3. Diemersdal Wine Farm
Description: Diemersdal Wine Farm lies to the northeast of Durbanville Hills and De Grendel, next to Meerendal Wine Estate. The farm has a rustic yet relaxed and inviting feel. The staff is super friendly and helpful. We can honestly say we had one of our best wine-tasting experiences here and at Rupert’s Wine Farm.
Unique feature: Al Fresco dining under a traditional vine roof. Wine tasting is on a first-come-first-served basis, so bookings are not taken.
Diemersdal Opening hours Monday to Saturday: 9 am to 5 pm.
Diemersdal Opening hours Sunday: 9 am to 3 pm. The last tasting is at 2 pm.
Diemersdal restaurant: The Farm Eatery Restaurant serves tapas-style meals, which even include a vegetarian selection. The restaurant is known for its outstanding Sunday lunch, which consists of a four-course meal for only R475 pp. Bookings are essential for Sunday Lunch.

# 3. Klein Roosboom: Best wine tasting near airport in Durbanville
Description: Klein Roosboom is a boutique wine farm only 20 km from Cape Town. The farm offers platters, picnic boxes, and a food truck. Here you can learn the art of sabraging a bottle of Cap Classique or savor a decandent bottle of red or white wine.
Unique feature: Wine-tasting experiences are held in cosy and nostalgic caves, each themed individually. The caves accommodate a variety of groups: Bubbliotique (1 to 4 persons), OU Gat (one to six persons), Marrakesh (one to six persons) and Versailles (one to six persons), Swinging Hollow (one to four persons), The Kitchen (one to eight persons) and The Pantry (one to eights persons). Opening hours are Thursday through Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, wine tasting is available from 10:00 until 4:30 (arrive at least an hour before closing).Â
Klein Roosboom restaurant: Jean restaurant serves amazing food in a tranquil environment with a view of the vineyard. The first time we had a meal, I felt like my family invited me to dinner. The vibe is authentic and warm.
Jean Restaurant is open from breakfast through dinner. The kitchen closes at 3:30 on a Sunday.
New: Klein Roosboom now offers pre-booked picnic boxes from the renowned Jéan Restaurant.

Wine Farm Day trip 3: Cape Town to Stellenbosch Wine Route – about 50 km
Stellenbosch is probably the most famous wine-producing area in South Africa. Judging by the number of wineries (about 150), this region is ideal for producing award-winning wines.
This region also has a shuttle service between the wine farms, which is divided into the Eastern Route, Southern Route, and Northern Route. The service can be booked via the Vine Hopper App. Departure is from the Stellenbosch Tourism Information office, but they also collect from your guesthouse in Stellenbosch.
It would be almost impossible for us to list all the wine farms in the Stellenbosch area. Therefore, we only list our favourites. Vergenoegd Löw Estate, Delaire Graff Estate, and Vergelegen Wine Estate.
#1. Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate
Description: Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate is filled with history, heritage, and harmony. The farm offers a variety of exciting activities, from cellar tours to environmental tours and heritage garden tours. There is a boutique hotel & Spa on the estate with the same name. Here, you can stay in utmost luxury in either a lodge room, luxury cottage (where we stayed) or Presidential Suite. The wine farm’s setting is so picturesque and ideal for a wedding venue. Unique feature: This wine farm is known for its hard-working runner ducks, which parade the estate early in the morning and late in the afternoon. This is one of the greatest spectacles we have witnessed. The ducks parade daily at 9:00 and 12:00 on their way to or return from the vineyards. The farm offers a unique Indigenous wine-tasting experience that consists of several heritage flavours like bokkoms, biltong, and amasi paired with a selection of red and white wines. There is also a wine shop on the estate.
Wine Tasting hours Monday to Sunday: 10 am to 4:15 pm.
Opening hours Sunday: 9 am to 3 pm. The last tasting is at 2 pm.
Vergenoegd Löw restaurants: Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate has two restaurants, Guewels and Clara’s Barn. Geuwels is the multi-award-winning, fine-dining restaurant of renowned Chef Bertus Basson. It is open for breakfast and lunch, Monday through Sunday and has an indoor and outdoor seating area.
# 2. Delaire Graff Estate
Description: Wellness has a name in Stellenbosch: Delaire Graff Estate. No wonder this estate is ranked 36th internationally by the World’s Best Vineyards. It has one of the most breathtaking locations of all the listed wine farms. This opulent wine farm is located atop the Helshoogte Pass, which offers exceptional views across Simonsberg Mountain. The interior is spellbinding, and every corner is a display of magnificent contemporary art pieces against a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop.
The estate offers various types of suites, from Superior Lodges with heated plunge pools to Garden Lodges, Luxury Lodges, and even Presidential Lodges.
Wine tasting is an elegant affair at Delaire Graff, and it is on a first-come, first-served basis. The estate is known for its holistic spa, which is the ideal environment to rejuvenate your wellness through an exclusive pampering session. The are two exclusive shops on the estate, one for custom-designed jewellery and the other for clothing by 100% Capri. Petra bought me a hand wash and cream set, which is one of the best products in a long time. Visit their online shop for everything luxurious.
Unique feature: Delaire Graff Estate is known for its award-winning wines, warm hospitality, outstanding cuisine, and contemporary art collection.

Delaire Graff restaurants: The two onsite restaurants, Delaire Graff and Höseki (a Japanese restaurant) offer exquisite dining experiences for food and wine connoisseurs.

Wine Farm Day trip 4: Cape Town to Franschhoek Wine Route – about 80 km
# 1. Boschendal Wine Estate
Description: Boschendal Wine Estate is a family-friendly wine estate with The Tree House Playground and Pump Track. The farm offers guided horse riding on the estate, or you can get close to nature by hiking the trails. Participate in garden tours to learn more about regenerative farming practices and how to grow a sustainable vegetable and herb garden.
Art lovers can enjoy quality exhibitions on the estate. Boschendal is the ideal venue for a wedding, private function, or conference. There is a Farm and butchery and homeware shop where you can find anything from home decorations to meat, fresh produce, and home-baked goods.
Accommodation near Cape Town Wine Farm
Unique feature: Boschendal offers the total package to enjoy a wine farm experience. Here, you can stay, eat, play and taste. If you want to stay on a wine farm, Boshendal’s Werf Garden Suite is the ultimate. We loved the charming suite with garden and mountain views, the lovely fireplace, and the picturesque communal swimming pool. Vegetables are grown at The Werf Food Garden on the Estate.
Here, you can admire insect hotels (yes, you read correctly) and free-roaming chickens that work on the farm to keep the gardens pollinated and fertilised. Do yourself a favour and check out their magnificent online store.
Wine-tasting experiences are available at two idyllic tasting spots, The Werf and Cellar Doors. Booking essential. The farm offers a wine and chocolate pairing, cheese pairing, charcuterie pairing, oyster pairing, brandy and chocolate pairing and Noble Late Harvest Chocolate pairing. Kids can enjoy the Fruit Cordial Pairing for only R200,
Opening hours are Monday to Sunday.
Onsite restaurant: The Werf restaurant is located alongside the Manor House. It offers soil-to-fork dining using local, seasonal ingredients. The Deli restaurant serves farm-style meals from breakfast through dinner. It is ideal for families with young children.
Picnics: During summer, enjoy a table-and-chair or blanket picnic on their expansive lawns with live music. Vegan and Gluten-free picnic menus are available too. You can book your picnic basket on their website. The price for a basket ranges from R850 for two people to R430 for one. There is even a Kids’ basket on offer. The picnic area closes at 4 pm. Bookings are essential 24 hours in advance.

# 2. Vergelegen Wine Estate
Description: Vergelegen Wine Estate is an impressive historical estate and a leader in the conservation of Cape Cultural Heritage. You can easily spend an entire day on the estate, which has become one of the best family-friendly wine estates. It displays the memorabilia of many distinguished guests. The gardens of this estate place it in a class of their own.Â
The estate boasts an estimated 400-year-old yellowwood tree. Visitors are encouraged to walk the magnificent pathways to enjoy the curated gardens or even enjoy a picnic under the massive Camphor trees. Please note there are R20 pp and R10 pp (scholars and pensioners) entrance fees at Vergelegen Estate. No dogs, cycling or private photo shoots are allowed. Unique feature of Vergelegen Wine Estate: The estate offers cellar tours, environmental tours, and heritage and garden tours in addition to their wine-tasting experiences. The Cellars tour is a 90-minute guided tour at R275 pp.
Opening hours Monday to Sunday: 8:30 am to 5 pm (last entry 4 pm).
Onsite restaurant: The estate offers three diverse dining experiences, from the Rose Terrace Tea Room to the Stables restaurant and white-tablecloth picnic in the Camphor Forest.

# 3. Anthonij Rupert Estate
Description: Step into a world of opulence where every detail speaks of luxury, quality and old-world charm. Anthonij Ruper Wine Farm and the sister wine farm L’Ormarins are nestled in the heart of the Winelands, approximately 64 km from Cape Town’s city bowl. The wine estate is perched against the slopes of the majestic Great Drakenstein Mountain range. Unique feature: There are two rooms, the Anthonij Rupert and Terra Del Capo Tasting Room. Both venues are beyond fabulous. We highly recommend their estate package, which includes access to the Franschhoek Motor Museum, the complementary tram (which rides between the two tasting rooms and the FMM), two tastings and even lunch at Terra Del Capo, their onsite Italian restaurant.Â

Wine Farm Day trip 5: Cape Town to Paarl Wine Route – about 60 km
The Paarl Wine route is awesome because there are so many exciting farms nearby. Alpaca Loom is one of the nicest experiences you will ever have on a farm. Look out for our stories and photos on our Instagram page about our fun day at The Alpaca Loom. There is a lovely coffee shop and weaving studio on the estate. I bought the most beautiful hand-woven scarf for my mom, made from alpaca wool. You can enjoy the Barn and Alphaca walks.Â
The farm is open daily from 9:30 am to 17:30 am. The farm is closed on Christmas Day.Â

#1. Babylonstoren Estate
Description: Babylonstoren Estate is probably the most well-known and biggest wine estate in South Africa. It has 94 hectares under vine and produces 13 grape varieties. It is so popular because it is a resort-like estate. The estate has a world-class garden spa with a gym. The spa offers several awesome treatments, such as a hammam, massages, a hot spa, wraps, facials, and mani and pedis. The swimming pool at the spa is a restored farm reservoir, perfect for those hot sunny days in South Africa.
Best wine farm accommodation near Cape Town
There is a super luxurious hotel, three places to eat, and a magnificent, manicured garden (with chickens roaming freely). The hotel may be a bit pricy, but it is worth every cent. As a hotel guest, you may access the gardens at all times, enjoy guided fishing and cycling, row on the dam, do a mountain drive (when booked for longer than two nights), participate in the morning harvest with the gardeners, learn from the bakers how to bake bread and enjoy the cellar and wine tasting tour.
What is there not to enjoy at Babylonstoren? All the activities are well-organised, professional and a lot of fun for the entire family.

Unique feature: The estate offers exceptional tours, such as the garden, cellar, and olive oil tour. There is even a self-guided, free wine museum at the entrance of the Tasting Room. A visit to Soetmelksvlei (a working farm) is a must-do experience for only R350 pp and R100 for kids. Take the shuttle from the Babylonstoren Ticket Office.
Visitors are encouraged to interact with master craftspeople as they go about their daily tasks. We highly recommend their Rooibos or Honeybush Tea. It is by far the best tea to boost your vitality and well-being.
We did the olive oil tour, during which everyone created their unique blend of olive oil. Our tour guide was very entertaining, and for only R350, we highly recommend this tour.

The Greenhouse restaurant is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Old Bakery is open Monday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings for a four-course meal consisting of antipasta, salads, homemade pasta, and pizza baked in its wood-fired ovens.
On Wednesday and Sunday evenings, you can enjoy a five-course Carnivore experience.

#2. Fairview Wine Estate
Description: Fairview Wine Estate is a working farm and one of the most visited farms in the Cape Winelands. It is known for its production of goat—or cow-milk cheese. This is one of the most kid-friendly farms. During September, baby goats can be seen on the legendary Goats Tower, which has become the farm’s mascot. Kids are welcome to pet and play with the cute, snowy-white farm goats.
There is a bakery and a large restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. The farm offers Farmer Donald’s Fairview Tours, which consist of a Goat Tour or Guided Mountain Walk ( about 3 hours). The Goat Tour includes cheese and wine tasting for only R150 pp, while the Mountain Walk starts at R250 pp.
Unique feature: We love the farm for its wine and cheese pairing tasting and sweet goat shed.
Tours are available on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Wednesdays at 2 p.m., Thursdays at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Fridays at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Bookings are essential and can be made online.

Wine Farm Day trip 6: Cape Town to Hermanus Walker Bay Wine Route – about 120 km
Walker Bay is in the Cape Overberg Region, about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. This cool-climate region incorporates the marine environment and Arctic currents. The best part about this region is that it consists of five unique zones that stretch from Klein River to De Kelders in Gansbaai.
#1. Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate
Description: Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is near the town of Hermanus. It is the ideal wine farm to visit in conjunction with your whale-watching trip. We love the farm’s unique and diverse tasting experiences. Their cellar tours are very informative and worth doing.
Luxury accommodation is also available on the estate. If you buy a case of wine with more than six bottles, you qualify for a complimentary pontoon cruise on the estate’s lagoon. The eco-boat trip at Benguela Cove is available Wednesday to Sunday at 10 am, 12:00 am, 2 pm and 4 pm.
The Wine Tasting Room serves some of the best platters to accompany your wine tastings.
Unique feature: The farm offers Wine Tasting, Saberage (opening a bottle of bubbly with a sword), oyster and wine pairing, chocolate and wine pairing, cheese and wine pairing, and even a wine, food, and art pairing experience.
The vineyard safari (on an open game viewing vehicle) and wine tasting are the ultimate experience. The tour gives you insights into the farming activities and growing cycles that make award-winning wine.
The Pirate Adventure Golf & Splash Park is one of the best fun activities for children. The park includes Pirate Adventure Golf and a splash pad for kids. Blackbear’s Dines is so cool. It is also the ideal party venue for the little ones.
