Sandcastle Luxury Villa: Private Family Villa for Eight on South Africa’s Wild Coast

Disclosure: I was incredibly lucky to win a weekend stay at Sandcastle Luxury Villa through an Instagram competition—and it truly exceeded all expectations. While our stay was complimentary, every impression, detail, and opinion shared here is entirely our own. This magical Villa would be worth every cent—whether you’re winning it or booking it. This goes for the added prizes too.

A Homely Villa ideal for Family and Friends Reunions

Tucked away on a private reserve and an easy 45-minute drive from East London, you will find a hidden gem on the previously (before 1994) Xhosa homeland, Ciskei.

The owners of Sandcastle Luxury Villa invited me and seven friends to experience the estate’s calming ocean breezes, golden light, and a sense of total peace. We had seen the photos, read the glowing reviews, and even browsed its feature in House & Leisure. But nothing quite prepared us for the quiet magic of this Eastern Cape luxury villa.

As we arrived and caught our first full glimpse of the Villa, we all paused for a moment. It looked like something straight out of a fairy tale. A real-life sandcastle, sculpted from the very landscape it rests on. With its soft, curved lines and earthy tones, Sandcastle Luxury Villa truly lives up to its name. We were pulled into a slower rhythm. The perfect location to relax and unplug after an eventful work week.

Our first thought was: “Is this an actual, life-sized sandcastle we get to stay in for the weekend?” The natural hues of the Villa matched perfectly with the warm, golden sands of the Eastern Cape coast. It felt as if it had been gently shaped by the sea breeze and sun, just like the powder-soft sea sand beneath our feet. There’s a playful magic here, grounded in nature yet filled with imagination. A grown-up fairy tale, we were lucky enough to stay at for the weekend.

Why book Sandcastle Villa on Airbnb?

I must admit, I am usually a bit hesitant when it comes to renting a holiday home. The idea of spending my getaway making beds, doing dishes, cooking meals, or dealing with laundry has never appealed to me. After all, a holiday should feel like a break, not a change of scenery with the same responsibilities. But Sandcastle Villa changed my perspective completely. Here, you’re not expected to lift a finger. A dedicated team of friendly housekeepers, a talented private chef, and even your own game guide ensure that every moment is taken care of. From turn-down service to sunset drinks and canapes, delicious meals, everything was handled so effortlessly, it felt like we were staying in a private boutique hotel; just with more space, privacy, and barefoot freedom.

Private Suites That Offer Space and Solitude

We were a group of friends travelling together—eight in total. And while we love each other’s company, we also appreciate time to ‘just be’. That’s what made Sandcastle so perfect. The Villa is expertly designed for a large family or group of friends.

Each of the four luxury suites offers a private en-suite bathroom, complete with ocean and nature views. Every suite felt like a main suite; light-filled, beautifully styled, with extra-large bathrooms featuring a bathtub with a view and a large walk-in shower. Our suites allowed us to retreat when we wanted to admire the breathtaking landscape from our cosy lounges, or try to spot some elusive whales in the distance.

Coastal Design Inspired by Nature

The Villa’s layout feels like it was sculpted by the wind itself. Inspired by the surrounding dunes, the design uses soft curves, flowing walls, and clever natural light combined with interesting African art. We moved through the space slowly as there was so much to observe and appreciate from the interiors.

House & Leisure described the Villa’s “experiential architecture,”. We now know and understand exactly what that means. Long, curved passageways led us from suite to lounge to pool to sea. Around each bend, we were surprised by pockets of space—a reading nook, a quiet bench, a secret sunset view. It felt like the Villa was revealing itself to us one scene at a time.

Plenty of Lounges, Plenty of Quiet

What we truly loved was how the Villa offered space to gather, but also pockets of calm. There are four unique lounge areas: one with wraparound ocean views, one sunken and cosy with a fireplace, one for movie nights, and another tucked into a quiet corner upstairs, which we nicknamed the Booktique.

We started our days with coffee on the patio, followed by a scrumptious breakfast prepared by our private chef. And what is a weekend away with a game drive? Our Saturday afternoon was first spent sliding down the dunes while getting much-needed exercise after all the indulgence. In the late afternoon, some snuck off to their suites for an afternoon siesta, while others enjoyed spending time by the poolside with a Haute Cabrière rosé in hand, catching up on each other’s busy lives. Did I mention we were very fortunate to spot some whales from our breakfast table?

Ocean View Pools and Wildlife Moments

Speaking of the pool… actually, pools. Sandcastle offers not one, but two swimming pools. As we stayed in winter, we could not make use of the secluded plunge pool in the courtyard or the sparkling rim-flow pool. However, we could easily imagine ourselves gathering here during warm summer evenings.

There’s nothing quite like lazing next to the pool with the sound of waves in the backdrop and giraffes casually wandering in the distance. Yes—giraffes. Sandcastle isn’t just a beach house. It’s part of a 275-hectare private game reserve, where you can spot giraffe, zebra, kudu, and sable antelope without ever leaving your sun lounger.

Where Beach and Bush Collide

One of the most unique things about this Eastern Cape family villa is how it combines both wildlife and beach. With 2 km of private beachfront and game drives available at any time of the day, it offers two completely different ways to connect with nature.

We loved that we could go on self-guided bush walks and guided game drives with the lodge manager, Divan. Every day involved an exhilarating experience. Yet, we also found time to do absolutely nothing. That is, if ‘nothing’ can be called watching the guys mastering their skills of flying drones out to sea. Keep a lookout for their footage to be featured on our Instagram page.

Thoughtful Touches That Made Us Feel Special

What truly made this stay unforgettable were the added thoughtful surprises and prizes. On arrival, the Villa’s friendly staff greeted us with a glass of sparkling wine. Little did we know that a pair of Veldskoen shoes awaited each of us in our suites—sturdy, stylish, and perfect for exploring the sandy tracks and grassy bushveld. It felt like a truly warm South African welcome. For those who know me well, I could not imagine myself wearing a pair of Veldskoen shoes until I tried them on. They are unbelievably comfortable and fashionable with the various colours on offer for the soles and laces.

As if that was not enough, we were also thrilled to be given the opportunity to test-drive two LDV double-cab bakkies for the weekend. My husband, Shaun, being a car fanatic, enjoyed test-driving the vehicle and finding out how effortlessly the LDV handles diverse terrain. The verdict was unanimous: “We are converted LDV fans”.

Our evenings ended with casual, intimate dinners and glasses of chilled Haute Cabrière Rosé, which received our stamp of approval and was titled “wine of the year.” There’s something about that translucent soft pink wine, that expansive view, and pink, golden twilight we’ll never forget.v

A Heartfelt Thank You to House & Leisure

A heartfelt thank you to House & Leisure for gifting me and my friends a one-year subscription to the classy full-print magazine. Their article on Sandcastle opened our eyes to architectural details we might have missed—and helped us understand the Villa on a deeper level. Their words brought the Villa to life before we even arrived, but experiencing it in person? That was something else entirely.

Final Thoughts: A Private Villa for Eight That Feels Like Home

Sandcastle Luxury Villa is the kind of place that redefines luxury travel. It’s designed for connection, but never sacrifices privacy. With four en-suite suites, four lounges, two pools, and an ever-changing natural canvas of wildlife and beach, it’s the ideal Villa for families or groups of eight.

We left feeling restored, inspired, and a little reluctant to return to reality. Because once you’ve experienced barefoot luxury on South Africa’s Wild Coast, nothing else compares.
