As a regular reader of our travel blog and a follower of our social media channels, you surely know that we are avid safari enthusiasts. So, it goes without saying how thrilled we were when Noortje Hart, the owner of both Elephants Crossing and Zebras Crossing Lodges in the Limpopo Province, invited us for a visit.

After two unforgettable days at the Elephants Crossing Lodge. We embarked on the 100 km journey to the Zebras Crossing Lodge in May 2024.

We were very excited about this trip, as it is located in a game reserve where you can roam freely. But more on that later.

In this article we introduce you to a family-friendly private game reserve called Zebras Crossing.

Where is the Zebras Crossing Lodge?

Zebras Crossing Lodge is located in the Limpopo Province, on the southern edge of the Waterberg Mountains, just 16 km from Modimolle (formerly Nylstroom). It is a straightforward drive from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, taking about two hours (approximately 180 km). The journey is easy, with well-maintained roads. At the gate to the reserve, we were met by a lodge staff member who guided us on a short drive through the reserve to the lodge. We were warmly welcomed by friendly staff members with refreshing towels and drinks.

Zebras Crossing Lodge – An Experience for the Whole Family

The Zebras Crossing Lodge is unlike most lodges we have visited. With only six suites accommodating up to 16 guests, it offers an intimate and family-friendly atmosphere that we found exceptionally delightful.

The Hart family has created an oasis of peace and relaxation amids the unique African nature. The lodge reminded us of our trips to Kruger Park,. as we sat on the terrace with a glass of wine, watching zebras drink from the waterhole

The other guests, during our stay,  were families with young children and grandparents enjoying time together in this gem. There are plenty of games available for children (Bernie and I had a blast playing bocce), as well as books and, of course, the pool with pool noodles.

The atmosphere at Zebras Crossing Lodge is very relaxed, and the staff always strive to make guests’ stay unforgettable.

What activities does Zebras Crossing Lodge offer?

Zebras Crossing Lodge offers a variety of activities that are fun and can be tailored to individuals’preferences. Guests can decide when and which activities they want to participate in. The lodge staff are extremely flexible and commited to making sure guests have a unique experience. We also experienced this warm hospitality during our visit to Elephants Crossing Lodge in the Welgevonden Game Reserve.

Mountain Biking at Zebras Crossing Lodge

For us, it is always a special experience to cycle through the bush, observing free-roaming wildlife. Mountain bike enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy at Zebras Crossing Lodge. There are four different mountain bike routes ranging from a 2.5 km (ideal for children) to a 5 km, a 13 km and a 22 km loop. The routes are interconnected, allowing easy switching during rides. The lodge provides well-maintained mountain bikes and helmets in all sizes (including for small ones for children).

Bush Walks at Zebras Crossing Lodge

A highlight for nature lovers is hiking through the African bush. The lodge offers guided and self-guided bush walk (along the highlighted trails). Shortly after sunrise, we set out to explore the untouched nature around the lodge. Due to our limited time at the lodge we were unable to take longer hikes to one of the many viewpoints in the reserve – something we plan to do on our next visit.

Safari at Zebras Crossing Lodge

Every afternoon, the lodge offers a safari game drive through the private reserve. Although you won’t find the Big Five here, you can certainly get up close to zebras, giraffes, and other wildlife while while enjoying the beauty of the Waterberg Mountain. The lodge’s game rangers share their extensive knowledge of flora and fauna, making the safari an unforgettable experience.

Swimming in the Rock Pools at Zebras Crossing Reserve

The rock pools within the Zebras Crossing Lodge reserve offer a stunning backdrop for relaxing hours amidst nature. We were driven to the rock pools by rangers with their open safari vehicle. After a 10-minute walk, hiking over stunning rocks formations, we reached the pools. Here Tshepo and Ghildo where prepared a picnic for us.

Because it was a warm autumn day, it didn’t take much from Bernie to convince me to take a plunge into the refreshing (read icy) water of the rock pools.

The Facilities of the Main Lodge

The main building of Zebras Crossing Lodge impresses with elegant decor that combines typical African elements with a bright, modern design. We were absolutely blown away by the inviting and warm ambiance of both lodges owned by the Hart family.

A huge, whitewashed fireplace draws one’s attention. The room is open to the roof, allowing a view of the impressive beams. During the day, this area serves as a cozy lounge with bright seating areas and a well-stocked bar. On chilly evenings, the lounge transforms into a dining area where you can enjoy dinner around the crackling fire.

During the day, meals are served on the two terraces, offering wonderful views of the wilderness and the waterhole, where zebras are regular visitors.
