In July 2023, I joined my sister and her family on a sailing trip to Port Cros. We anchored near the tiny island of the French Riviera.

This island immediately captured my heart because it offers a break from the hustle and bustle of the Côte d’Azur. On this hidden island, you will find pristine beaches and a remarkable variety of marine life. Interestingly, this island is known as the oldest marine park in Europe. The island occupies approximately 1700 hectares of sunken land and 2900 hectares of sea. Several Roman remains have been found in the area. Additionally, there are around thirty shipwrecks that attract historians.

Can one drive on Port Cros?

There are no roads and consequently no cars on Port Cros island. However, there are many quiet footpaths and trails.

In this article, I introduce you to Port Cros and tell you why this island (on the Côte d’Azur) is a perfect destination for nature lovers.

Port Cros is a National Marine Reserve and part of the Parc National de Port Cros, which means that the environment here is protected and preserved.

The biodiversity is impressive, with an abundance of marine life, birds, and plants. This protected status has made the island a mecca for divers and ecotourists.
